Bernard F. Morrey, MD
Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, Mayo Medical School; Emeritus Chairman, Department of Orthopedics, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota

Dr. MorreyBernard F. Morrey, M.D., is the emeritus chair of the Department of Orthopedics at Mayo Clinic. He holds the academic rank of Professor of Orthopedics.

He has served in a number of extramural professional capacities, including Past President of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Past President of the American Orthopaedic Association, and Past President of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. He is currently chair of the Board of Trustees of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.

He is a member of a number of specialty orthopedic organizations, including the Orthopedic Research Society, Hip Society, Knee Society and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. Dr. Morrey has been recognized for his contribution on numerous occasions to the research arena – both clinically and administratively. He is a Fulbright Scholar and a former member and consultant to the Food and Drug Administration Orthopedic Device Panel.

He has also recently completed an 8 year term on the Board of Governors of Mayo Clinic. He is currently involved in Mayo practice optimization efforts with particular emphasis on monitoring and improving the cost effectiveness of the Mayo practice.

Dr. Morrey's major area of orthopedic interest is adult reconstructive surgery with particular emphasis on the hip, knee and elbow. Additional academic interests include basic research investigations primarily involving joint kinematics. He holds five patents for orthopedic devices, and he has authored three major textbooks all in multiple editions dealing with the elbow and joint reconstruction and approximately 325 publications in peer-review literature. Dr. Morrey has regularly served as an external reviewer and visiting professor of orthopedic training programs in the United States and internationally.

Dr. Morrey was raised in Texas and, after working as an aerospace engineer for two years at NASA in Houston, he attended medical school at the University of Texas, Galveston, and he completed an internship and residency at Mayo Clinic Rochester. He also received a master's degree in biomechanics from the University of Minnesota. After two years of service in the Air Force, he joined the staff at Mayo.
